Black and White Floral Tapestry Cuff

This cuff started out with a lovely piece of white cotton material that has a chrysanthemum floral motif embroidered in black. This machine embroidered material was repurposed from fabric scraps left from another sewing project. The cuff is completely lined with bright red ultra suede, which is very soft and comfortable to wear. There is a layer of fabric interfacing between the cotton and ultra suede to give the cuff a little extra stiffness.

The entire cuff has been edged with black seed beads in a brick stitch technique. I sewed each bead on by hand using nymo thread, a sturdy, synthetic thread widely used by bead weavers and embroiderers. After finishing the brick stitch, I added a fringed edging using tiny red and matte gold rocaille seed beads and more black beads.

Once the beading was complete, I added an Ikebana button for the closure. This is a beautiful button with a very matte black surface and a metallic gold floral motif. There is a reinforcement button on the inside to provide stability and to prevent the main button from pulling on the cotton. I crocheted a frilly loop with thin black cotton and red beads to add visual interest to the closure. Please note that the crocheted closure was created over a base loop of stiff C Lon cord so that the cotton crochet will not stretch out or loosen while worn.

Every stitch and bead was sewn on by hand and this cuff is a unique, one of a kind wearable artwork.

Dimensions: This cuff was designed for a 7 inch (177.8 mm) wrist and is 1.875 inches (47.6 mm) wide.
